ABOUT TOLGA
Tolga is located on the Kennedy Highway just north (5 km) from the service town of Atherton on the way to Mareeba. Tolga is separated from Atherton separated by the “Tolga Scrub” a patch of remanent rainforest that forms an archway over the highway. The Atherton Industrial Estate lies between the two towns and is to the east of the Tolga Scrub.
Originally named Martintown, the name was later changed to Tolga ("Red Mud" in the Aboriginal language).
Tolga started life as a staging post on the track between Port Douglas and Herberton and has served as a centre for the timber industry and is one of the richest agricultural areas in the North. It produces numerous crops such as maize, peanuts, potatoes, avocados, mangos, grass seeds, hay etc.
Tolga is a friendly little village with limited facilities but it is not far to Atherton for the rest of you needs and it is about 1 hours drive to Cairns.
Rangeview & Tandara are popular elevated subdivisions of Rural Residential properties on the edge of Tolga.
Facilities include: General Store / Newsagent, Greengrocer specialising in local & tropical foods and specialist grocery, Post Office, Pub, Butcher, Bakery, Takeaway shops, Racecourse, Fuel, Primary School, Sports ground, Tennis courts. Accommodation includes B&B, Motel, Caravan Park & Backpackers.
Tolga Markets are the second most popular market held on the Tablelands and is held at the race course from 7am to 12pm every first Sunday of each month. A large range of local produce, hand crafted items are for sale plus food and drinks available.
