Donotation

Atherton First National Principals Grant McAuliffe & Richie Cahill & staff Colleen Donovan, Margie Read, Kate Van Prooyen, Daniel English (Nubili Carruthers absent) give a donation of $2,500 to Carinya Home for the aged.

Grant McAuliffe said that Carinya was a very worthy recipient as the home provides an excellent facility for residents of the Tablelands.  Penny Somma, fund raising officer for Carinya, said this donation will contribute to the Specific Care Unit (Barron Court) which has almost raised $500,000 towards the target of $1,000,000.

She also said it is very difficulty to keep up with the ever increasing costs and demand that are placed on the home to maintain the quality resident care provided. All donations are greatly appreciate and any wishing to assist the cause please contact Penny on 40912177.

Variety Bash

LOCALS SUPPORTS VARIETY CLUB

Local residents Ron North & Richie Cahill have taken up the challenge in raising funds for the worth while charity “Variety Queensland.”

Variety is a world wide organization known as the "Heart of Show Business" - an umbrella children's charity dedicated to raising funds for sick, disabled and disadvantaged children under 18 years of age.

All of the net funds raised by Variety Queensland are spent on children and/or children's organization within Queensland.

A number of Local businesses in Yungaburra and Atherton have joined in with sponsorship to the Variety Club.  All sponsors names or logo's will be displayed on Variety Club vehicle supplied by Ron North.  The theme of the car is "Welcome to Yungaburra Heritage Village" with the car being names "Yungaburra Fellas".

The vehicle is a HQ 1972 Holden with 253 motor. All vehicles must have been built prior to June 1970 and be non performance modified. The Bash is not a race, rally or speed trial. The vehicle will be travelling with approximately 200 other vehicles in their trek from Cairns to Birdsville via Cooktown, Karumba, Julia Creek, Longreach, Windorah.

Ron & Richie stopped off at Yungaburra State School to display their car and spread a little cheer with lollies and balloons after the terrible tragedy of the fire at the Yungaburra School. Repair costs are expected to be close to $1,000,000.

The Variety Bash started as a drive in the outback with a few mates. In 1985, Adventurer Dick Smith took a group of intrepid motorists from Bourke to Burketown in their old cars, raising money for charity along the way. All of the money raised went to the Variety Club of Australia to further its support of sick, disabled or disadvantaged children.

You can discover more about the Variety Club on their web site www.varietyqld.org.
